Foreword
This booklet is written primarily as an introduction to flat sheet cutting and handling for use by the novice. The topics discussed mar assist in providing a foundation upon which to base the solution of problems arising in individual printing plants, or upon which to consider improvements in techniques or machines currently used.
The student is urged to observe improvements being developed in paper cutting and handling equipment. For example, at the time of this writing there is a definite trend toward adaptation of hydraulic power to cutting machines replacing gear trains and friction clutches. Specialty machines and labor saving attachments to standard machines are being produced which phenomenally increase the speed of paper cutting and handling. High labor costs make these improvements merit investigation by progressive printers and paper houses.
The writer has specifically limited the material to the cutting and handling of flat sheets in quantity. For this reason, methods of cutting individual sheets with simple shears or cutting sheets from rolls with rotary shears have not been included.
